A Crazy Redhead’s Blog

“my” Oprah airs tomorrow, Monday April 6

It is my goal to have a fun new exciting blog to post by the end of this week.

(if you have not already read about my experience at the Oprah show, click here to read about my experience at Harpo.  I was lucky enough to be one of the 14 moms featured on the show – even if only for a few seconds!)

For now, this is one more blog about the Oprah mom show (Or, as Oprah introduces the show – The Secret Lives of Moms - which sure makes our lives sound more exciting than they are!)

For now, I wanted to let you know ‘my Oprah’ will finally air tomorrow, Monday April 6, 2009.  Set your DVRs and Tivos to tape it.  I am even going to set mine to tape the 9pm showing because if you live in Central Florida, there is a very likely possibility Oprah will be preempted by “extreme weather condition” coverage or breaking news from the Casey Anthony trial…. Oy vey!

When we attended the taping, the show included a teeny tiny bit of my video answer to the question “What is one of the funnier things you have done in a crisis?”  Here is the long answer, which the O producers edited down to about 4 or 5 seconds:

The funniest thing I have done LATELY in a crisis – because there have been so many…

We had a minor crisis one morning as we arrived at school.  We were getting to the end of our unbelievably efficient and quick carpool line.  As we are about to get to our drop-off spot in carpool line, I tell the kids to grab their lunches.  At that very moment, my daughter realizes grabbing her lunch is going to be quite difficult because ’said lunch’ is currently sitting on my kitchen counter in our home about 14 miles from our current global position.  Since I am not the Disney character Mrs. Incredible and do not have stretchy bendy arms which can reach out my car, across the interstate, over to the next county, into my neighborhood and through my home all the while avoiding the morning traffic, we are going to have to figure out another option.  Also, while I love our school, unfortunately, it is a twenty-minute drive from our house.  Therefore going home to get her lunch and driving back is not a preferable option.

No problem.  I am resourceful.

Also, I am prepared.   Since I do everything I can to avoid fast food snacking yet I pickup very hungry children after school, I keep a plethora of healthy snacks in my car.

Here comes the solution (and remember, this is all happening within about 7 seconds):

·    I grab a Target plastic bag, which is holding an item to return (seriously, at any given moment, my car will definitely have a Target bag with an item needing to be returned)

·    I empty out whatever happens to be in the bag

·    I reach into my console, which is meant to be filled with a selection of CDs of great music but instead, is filled with a variety of 100-calorie snack bags, lots of sugar-free gum and of course,  the Emergency Life-Hammer which G-d-willing, I will never need to use.

·    I grab a few quick items meeting as many of the food groups as possible (nuts – protein, wheat thins – starch, yogurt covered raisins - bonus because it is from the dairy group and the fruit/veggies group)

·    VOILA, my daughter has a well-balanced lunch, which would even make the Today Show nutritionist, Joy Bauer, proud!

After reading over the story I just wrote for you, I have concluded two things:

I can see why the O producers chose to edit me down to 5 seconds because I kind of use many many many words to tell you a very short story.

 AND

I really hope my children look back on their childhood and are impressed with my quick-thinking problem solving abilities.  However, I would be willing to wager that 25 years from now, they each will have their own blogs complaining about me!

I hope you will watch Oprah tomorrow , Monday April 6 and look for myself and my BFF.  I could see us in the commercial for the show but honestly that is only because I used slow motion!!  I am keeping my fingers crossed that my little teeny bit did not end up on the cutting room floor!

So you’re the one?! lol I loved your, albeit, short story of how you prepared your daughter’s lunch from snacks in you car. It may have been cut down to a sound bite but your story stuck out and one I definitely remembered. I’m sure it was an awesome experience!
